How do you store Tulip bulbs?
There are two simple ways of storing your tulip bulbs.
The simplest method is to leave them in the ground where they are. Once the leaves turn yellow, remove the decaying leaves. Make sure the bulbs do not get waterlogged (see planting tulips for more information).
The other method is to lift the bulbs and dry store them. This should be done if you think the bulbs will sit in very wet soil or if you wish to avoid bulb eating slugs, etc.
Once the leaves turn yellow remove them and take the bulb out of the soil.
Keep the bulbs in a cool, dark (and dry) location. Although they need to be kept dry, they should not be kept in a warm/hot location as this will not be beneficial.
Any other tips?
Remember not to let the bulbs dry out completely. The advantages of digging them up for dry storage is that you get to see the bulb and can also divide them up.
Storing them can help to prolong their lifespan and get you more flowers for your money. Storing them in sand can help to keep them dry or even in old egg boxes.
So, in essence, you can leaves the bulb where they are - very simple!
OR
Store them in a cool, dark and dry area until you wish to replant them. Do not remove them from the soil until the leaves look dead as the bulbs need a little time to replenish their energy stores.
